Welcome to session 11 of Your Road to Business Success in 2018. Simone Vincenzi here from GTeX with the expert business canvas. And last time, we talked about the software that you need. If you haven’t completed the exercise that shows the software that you’re going to use to run your business in 2018, then what the heck are you waiting for? Go back, complete the exercise.
Today then, we are going to focus on the part of the canvas that you might still wondering what the heck is it, which is the parking space. Now, you can see that there is this thing called a parking space here. You might be wondering what the heck it is. Now the reason why I decided to put the parking space there, it is because I deal often with a lot of people that are very creative, they love to create products. They have a lot of ideas, they love to create services. They love to solve problems. When they see a great idea, or when they see a great strategy, then they decided to go out there and test it out.
Now, the parking space is the space where you can put all your ideas. It’s that space where you can just with a blank canvas, you can say, “I would love to test this thing this year.” But this is the thing. You don’t want to move away from the strategy, because you already worked really hard, right, to create all this strategy, to create your marketing plan, your offers, your sale targets, the software, the key activities, the people that you need. And suddenly then, you decide to put something on. Now without realising that it’s going to mess up your sales targets, it’s going to require a different marketing plan, it’s going to require different offers, it’s going to require different key activities, and it’s going to require people. And sometimes it might require different software.
So every time that you think you have a brilliant idea, think about how much is it costing you to implement this, and how long is it really going to take? Is it distracting you from the strategy that you have created? And that’s the shiny penny syndrome, right? The shiny penny syndrome, “Oh my God, this is amazing, this is amazing, this is amazing.” But the reason why you make consistent sale, now you make consistent sales and you grow a business, is with consistency. No one ever grew his business just by creating different things just because they felt like it, right?
But then, there is also room to test. So as long as you set time aside and you pick one or two things that you are going to test along the year that are not going to interfere or compromise with the strategy that you put in place, so then you can implement the strategy and make money, monetize it, then great. You can pick one or two a year and then run with them. But that’s what the parking space is about, and that’s why I wanted to create it there.
Now I don’t want you to do anything right now with this, because I don’t want you to start thinking about, oh, what kind of things or idea I can put in there unless you already have something that you want to put. But unless you already have something that you want to use it to complete it, then forget about this for the moment. I don’t want you to go off on tangent right now. Focus on this strategy, okay? And then, once you’ve done it, then you can move to next video, which will help wrap up the full process of the business canvas.
