Hello, hello, hello, Simone Vincenzi here and here is another episode of Explode Your Expert Business Show. And today we are talking about how to get known even if no one knows you. How to build your profile even if no one knows you.
Now, one of the biggest problems that I had and that’s why I’m doing this episode and one of the biggest problems that I had was that even after I became really good at this business here of coaching, I still started my business when I was 22. And I was very young, I was very inexperienced.
And so I had to really work hard to not only build my skills but also build my profile because not many people knew me. And so the biggest problem I had and one of the biggest problems I had was that even when I became really good at the business of coaching and the game of coaching and the skill of coaching then a lot of people would not trust me because they said, “Well, who is this weird Italian guy “that just came out of no where, “came from a different industry?” And so it was very, very difficult to get established for these different reasons.
And even when we built a coaching business over six figures then one of the problems that we had was still that people didn’t perceive me or didn’t perceive GTeX as worthy of attention or as really credible. And so I had really to think hard about this because I said, “How can I get known “for the things that I do really well? “I’m really great at this. “I really need the world to know this.” The problem was that at the time I was the only one saying, and my clients and myself, I was the only one saying, “Oh, Simone is really great at what he’s doing.” But I didn’t have too many clients.
We had a handful of clients that got the business up to six figures. And it was a very challenging redefining and defining how can I build my profile in the right way. In particular, because when I wanted to and I was approaching some of the larger opportunities, they were saying, “Well, you’re not really what we are looking for.” Or they would completely ignore me or they would not get back to me. And so that’s why it was so frustrating.
And at the time, I knew that I needed to do something about this. I knew that I needed to do something about this. I needed to do something different and I needed other people to be able to see what they were not seeing yet. They were able to see that there was quality, that there was the work that we were doing. And in particular, building that trust, building that credibility to their eyes. So then it wouldn’t become so difficult to get a client and to support them, but it would just become, “Hey, I wanna work with you. “How can I work with you?” And so that’s the process that we’ve been through in the past few years. And that’s what I would love to share with you. So no one knows you, where do you start? Where do you start?
Well, there are a few things that I’m going to explore today and the first one is the fact of speaking everywhere. Now speaking is one of the most and the biggest thing that you can do for your business. Because your ability to communicate will often equate your ability to generate income. Why am I saying this? If you think about the biggest leaders that there are in the world they are all incredible communicators. And when someone wants to hire a coach or consultant or a trainer or an expert, they are looking for a leader. That’s what they’re looking for.
They’re saying, well, if I give you this money or if I follow you, will you be able to lead me where I want to go? So that’s why your communication skills are incredibly important. And your ability to go and speak everywhere you can, everywhere you can, will help you raise incredible your profile. Because suddenly if people start seeing you speaking in many different places, they’re automatically going to associate it with you must be good at what you’re doing because other people are hiring you for this.
Now, at the beginning it might be there’s more speaking engagements or networking events or going and speaking in schools like I did. And the great thing about the game of speaking is that you don’t have even to get to your own speaking engagement. For example, at the beginning when no one wanted to hire me to speak or no one wanted me to speak at their events. And so I did two things. The first one, I’m going to sell the second one later, but the first one was getting a part time job as a contractor for companies that were delivering courses in schools. Now that company got me and I was working actually with about four or five different companies and those companies were getting me in more than 150 schools all over the UK every year. I did it for about three years.
Now, if then seeing what I was posting on social media, I was always showing the different schools I was speaking at. I was sharing the learnings that I was getting. I was sharing what I was talking about and I was open with the fact that I’m here with my bank or learning performance or or future foundations, given the company I was working for delivering their courses. I was really open about that. I wasn’t showing off and saying, “Oh, look I’m here in the school “delivering my own material.” No, I wasn’t lying. But people then got used to seeing me speaking and guess what? When even I was approaching other event organisers to speak because now my profile, even on social media and everywhere else, was speaking, speaking, speaking, speaking, speaking, after a couple of years, it became really easy to find a speaking engagement. Also becoming throughout the process I became really good.
So think about it, where can you go if no one knows you? What organisations can you join that can open the doors for you? Can already give you what you’re looking for. They already have them. And there’s nothing wrong in using this as a stepping stone to build your profile when no one knows you. Then I did another thing which gets me to the second point regarding speaking. If no one gets you to speak at there event, organise your own. Create your own platform. And that’s what we did.
We created our own platform with Ben and I, which started as GTeX. It was the very beginning of GTeX. An event where we’re getting people we were getting two external speakers coming in. And Ben and I were hosting the event and we started in a farm. I mean, we got this room in a farm called the straw bale room at Hackney City Farm. There was really smells of shit everywhere, pigs around, but that was where we started. That’s what we could afford. Zero, nothing. That’s why we got the room for free. But that needed to help us to get something started. And that was seven years ago.
Little did we know that those events, which they are still running now in five star hotels, but they represented the very core, the very foundation of what GTeX became. So think about that. If your profile is not big enough to be in demand create your own platform because then you can collaborate with other people. You will find that you will expand your network in the right way. That was one of the best moves that we made unknowingly and inadvertently. Because during that process we were networking and collaborating with our mentors, we’re networking with other speakers.
They would introduce us to other smaller events and we build a buzz around GTeX and around us. And we started from having events with two people, three people, 10 people, 20 people, 50 people, 100 people. And so that grew over the years. So if no one hires you find your own platform and create your own platform. That’s the other thing that you can definitely do to grow your profile when no one knows you.
Now the bottom line here is the collaborations with other. Because if no one knows you by tapping into other people that are better known than you, then you will access not only their audience but also your credibility will slightly increase. Of course if no one knows you and you go approach Tony Robbins or Oprah, it’s very unlikely they’re gonna even get back to you. But if you look at people that are just a couple of steps ahead, just a couple of steps ahead, that have just a slightly larger audience, they have just a slightly larger network, that are just slightly more known than you are, they will be delighted to come to your even small event because it’s also part of their game. And now your credibility and influence will raise just a bit and then the more you get known, the more introductions you get then the more higher profile people you can get to speak at your own events.
Now let’s say, well but I don’t want to do events. It sounds like really a lot of work. I need to put out the events. I need to get the people in the room. I want to create an online business. I don’t want to create an event business. I get that. The same principle applies. Instead of organising an event, create a podcast for example. That’s one of the reasons why I started my podcast four years ago, three and a half years ago. It was an experiment to get in front of more people and leading people at the same time.
Podcasting for me has been one of the best business tools I’ve ever used and that’s why I love it so much. Because I’m not only able to build a relationship with someone and it’s almost like having a chat and getting to know each other better, but I’m able to give value not only to my audience but to their audience. And also to increase my audience and increase my leverage ’cause they are gonna share the podcast interview and even when on Google people are going to Google their name, my podcast will come up. So there is so many benefits to interview other experts, to give other people a platform.
So this is the biggest thing, which is the bottom line, if you become someone that gives other people a platform, then you become in demand. If you’re the one always looking for the platform, then you’re always gonna be looking and always gonna be knocking on doors. But the one that really have the power in this industry they are people that are able to build a platform. That’s why your following becomes so important. Your audience become so important. But if you don’t know it yet, then create your platform. And at the beginning it might be just your mom, your dad, your sister, your partner, your dog, your cat that is going to listen to it, but that’s fine. That’s totally fine. You don’t need more than that. You don’t need more than that. Because it will organically grow.
The more guests you will have, the more people you will have on your show, the better quality of guest you will have, then the more your podcast will organically grow. So whether you’re running an event or whether you’re arranging a podcast, be the person who creates a platform for other people. If you do that, you will always be in demand. Because you’re doing the thing that is one of the most difficult to do, but it is the most important in this industry. Does it make sense?
If you’re watching live, give me a whoop, whoop here in the comments if it makes sense and if you’re listening to the recording on the podcast or on YouTube just give me a whoop, whoop in the comments or wherever or just give me a virtual whoop, whoop. Alright, so that’s the third one.
Now the fourth one is related to writing into publications. Of course, if you’ve never written an article before or you’ve just published three posts on LinkedIn approaching Forbes or Entrepreneur magazine or the Huffington Post and say, “Hey, I wanna become a contributor “or I want to be featured on your platform.” is quite unrealistic, let’s be honest. It’s very, very difficult to do it that way. But what do you need to start doing is to build a trail of a digital presence. So the game here to become more known and build your profile when no one knows you, is getting other people to talk about you.
And there are always local publications, whether it’s online, whether it’s offline, that will want to feature people that are part of that local area. But if you’re going for a mainstream national huge publication, now you are competing with really hundreds of thousands of people that want to be featured there. You’re competing with PR agency and so on. But if you approach a small independent blogger or if you approach a small independent local magazine or newspaper, there not going to be a lot of other people that are approaching them. And this is why you will start getting them to talk about you.
But guess what? Now you can use that article to be featured in a slightly larger publication and you will use that article to be featured in a slightly larger publication. And then you will use that article to be featured in a slightly larger publication. So this will grow as we say here, exponentially. But you start small, you start small, and that’s where a lot of people struggle. Because they see, oh well, I want to be on this publication, I want to be on this stage, I want to be in the top, the number one in the world without really realising and without really putting the work in that represents the foundations. But when you build a house on solid foundations then everything else come 100% easier.
So think about it. What can you do right now to start? How can you become that source of attraction? How can you create a platform for other people? Is that an event that you want to create to get other people to speak at your own one? Is that gonna be a podcast or you’re featuring other people consistently and raising your profile in that way? Is that writing for a small niche publication and show the world that actually you have other people that are talking about you? Or is that as well going and partnering up with other organisation and going and deliver their material as a speaker because they already have those opportunities? Think about that.
Think what can you do right now. Because that’s the power of building your profile. And once you’re able to build your profile, once you have reached that critical credibility, getting clients is going to be easy. Growing your business is going to be easy. Getting a lifestyle business is going to be really easy because you have built the foundation. But you gotta put the work in. You gotta put the work in and be happy to write for something that is going to be read by three people. Be happy to be speaking at an event where there are four people there. But that’s the starting point. Because if you’re not happy with that, if you’re not grateful and happy that you have those opportunities already in front of you, then it’s very unlikely you’re going to be able to leverage the other ones or the other opportunities.
So that’s all from me today. Make sure you take action, this is the most important thing. Now for those of you that are really good at what you’re doing and you want to know how to get featured on Forbes, on the other major publications or even smaller publications, then I’ve created a training called How to Get Featured on Forbes and Other Major Publications. Same strategy use it for a smaller publication. Just way easier and less time-consuming.
So make sure you click the link here, that there is in the show notes or here in the comments or in the description as well, so then you can see and get access to the training straight away. I’m looking forward to seeing you on the other side and as well the next episode. Thank you very much for watching or listening and always remember that together we grow exponentially.
