Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome.
Simone Vincenzi here for episode number 92 of Explode Your Coaching Biz.
The show today we are going to talk about 15 ways to get speaking gigs, I’m really excited about the show.
For those of you that don’t know me, how come you don’t know me, what do you mean you don’t know me?
Well for those of you that don’t know me, my name is Simone Vincenzi, co-founder of GTeX, we turn experts into authorities, that’s what we do, by helping you creating events that sell, webinar that sell, having a lot of clients, getting you into publications and all that jazz.
And today as part of our live show, thank you very much for joining us. Anna, you are awesome.
Today is part of our weekly live show where every week at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday evening, 7:00 p.m.
UK time, we’re going to help you answer your question and also discuss the different topics of the week and what’s working right now in our business because we have two things that we are doing.
Number one on Tuesday we are releasing the episode with the guest interview so if you have missed that episode with Tim Hunt, make sure that you check it out.
And the second thing that we are doing is also to help you out in your business where I can share the way I work and the way GTeX works.
So you get from me and you get from the guests.
As well, if you do three things, if you want to win more than 10,000 pound worth of mentoring which is our lifetime membership.
There are three things you gotta do for us to help you and work with you up until you reach six figures for free. Number one, you need to like this post.
Number two, you need to comment.
And number three you need to share it with the world. So do this right now and we can get started with the music.
Now as I said today, I’m going to share with you 15 ways to help you get more speaking gigs because a lot of people come to me and they say one thing. “Simone, how do you get 200 speaking gigs a year?”
And then I say well, I know how to get gigs. So then they say “Simone, how do I get speaking gigs” and that’s what I decided to teach you.
Now this came from a master class I did in a webinar last week, it was incredibly successful, people loved it.
So I decided to give you a shorter version of it so I’m not gonna be into detail of the explanation because we have 20 minutes maximum but I’m going to tell you the 15 different ways.
Then if you want just pen me an email and I’ll send you the recording, actually I’ll put that here in the show notes, the recording of that show, of that webinar.
So that you can listen to the more detailed explanation on how these 15 ways work and you will see that in the show notes.
Now, let’s start the music. 15 ways to get speaking gigs, because a lot of people say “I don’t know how to get speaking gigs” and by the end of this webinar, I don’t want you to come back to me and say, “Oh you know Simone, I don’t know how to get speaking gigs.”
No, you will know how to get speaking gigs, that’s what I want from you. Alright, let’s start the music, in the meanwhile, hi CJ, hi Fiona, hi Anna, thank you very much for staying with me and joining me here.
So number one, the first way is what I think is the best way. It’s the best way of every other way, which is personal introductions.
Personal introduction you get, in a nutshell, you get someone else to introduce you as a speaker.
So I say hey here is Simone, meet him, I think he would be a great speaker for your event.
That’s a fantastic way to run, to get speaking gigs because with personal introduction it works incredibly well.
So that’s number one, personal introduction, get other people to introduce you as much as possible.
That’s the biggest one. Then the second way is podcast. Some of you are already, feel you thinking, what do you mean about podcast, how do you get speaking gigs listening to podcast?
No, you don’t have to listen to podcast, but you can get a podcast interview. So you can contact a podcast host, and say “Can you interview me.”
And then the podcast host will say “Who then maybe I’m more than happy, yeah, I’ll interview you.” Now in a moment, when you’re doing the interview with a podcast host then at the end then you’ll ask him, the podcast host, how can I, do you run as well events, or do you know someone that runs events.
Now a lot of people in the podcast space, they are all event organisers or know people in the event space because we are all in the broadcasting space so that’s why getting podcasts works.
Then third one is video, you must have video of yourself speaking if you want to be a great speaker and if you want to get booked.
Because the first thing that some people will say is, can I see one of your video.
Now if you don’t have a video of you speaking, but I’m not just saying a livestream, I’m saying of you speaking in front of an audience.
Why, because then they can see how you react, how you interact with the audience, if you the right fit, if you are a good style, if you are the kind of speakers that they’re looking for.
So that’s the third way to get speaking gigs. And another way I got speaking gigs as well was from people finding me on YouTube or finding me on Facebook and say “I love your video, would you like to come and speak at my event?” and of course I said of course, of course, I love that.
So that’s it for the third way and the fourth way is pay to play.
Pay to play is a model that not many speakers use unfortunately because I think it’s one of the best models ever.
How does the pay to play model works? The pay to play model works in a way that you are paying for playing.
Right, makes sense. You want to speak, you pay to speak on a certain stage and some people might say “but why do I have to pay, they should pay me, I shouldn’t pay to speak on a stage.”
Well it depends because if the audience is the right audience and you pay a fraction of a price or you pay a few hundred or a few thousand pounds to speak on that stage then you get tens of thousands pounds or dollars back, I call it a good return on investment in particular because you know that the audience there is already qualified, has already seen you speak, they will give you speaking opportunity.
So the client that you will get from there they are going to immediately, some of them invest in high ticket offers. In fact sometimes I made a pay to play and made more than 20,000 pound with 15 minute speech, that I’m really happy because yeah brilliant, I love that, 20 minutes, 20 grand, hey, in clients, not from there, being paid but in clients and then they book me.
That’s one thing, another way. Way number five is trade shows, trade shows where you can, suppose you can speak at trade shows, you can sponsor a booth at a trade show and then they will give you a speaking slot.
That’s another place to find speaking gigs so that you can connect with potential clients.
Then we have number six, number six is networking events. Is networking events and I got all the 15 ways here.
Number six is networking events, why?
Because then you go on networking and a lot of time, networking events they will have a keynote speaker for the day and a lot of time, it might be actually you need to be a member to speak there but it’s worth it because you might pay a few hundred pounds a year, a few hundred dollars a year for the membership, but a lot of times you can speak in all the other branches of the networking event.
Which means that you pay a few hundred dollars and you have access to an unlimited audience which is what we love.
Given that considering but you need to find also where your audience is, like your ideal kinds and at talking events and which kind of networking events are they. Right? You’re following?
Brilliant. So then we’re going into way number seven.
Which is local Chamber of Commerce.
Wherever you’re based in the world There is generally a Chamber of Commerce If you’re living in the world we call “The First World” But I always heard that there a lot of Chambers of Commerce around so you can go and that’s something I did you can go to and approach your local Chamber of Commerce, propose a workshop or a talk That you want to give and then ask them when is the next meeting.
So you can come along, get introduction, know people, know the organiser, and get a gig in that way.
That’s another great way to get speaking gigs. Another way is MC’ing and hosting gala dinners and award ceremonies.
And other people they don’t do that and the reason why they don’t do that is because they’re not good at doing it.
So if you’re not good at hosting, which is not speaking. MC’ing and speaking, they are two different things. If you are great at MC’ing go for that.
If you are generally a kind of vibe and high energy personality or you are the life of the party you can bring light to an event you are the perfect MC.
If you are very quiet, reserved, analytical speaker MC’ing, I’m telling you, is not for you. Why?
Because you need to be the life of the party to be a great MC for an awards ceremony. So this is another way where you can get absolutely, that works incredibly well, you can get speaking gigs by award ceremonies and also gala dinners. Brilliant!
Now we are going into the next one. The next one is the ninth one which is Toast Master.
Now, Toast Master, again, is another great way to get speaking gigs.
Because what you’re doing, Toast Master, is a speaking organisation.
So you are getting the speaking gig at Toast Master and then, because you have already the speaking gig then you can also share your story, you can get your footage, you can get picture of your speaking there.
You can connect with people and network with people and get clients from Toast Master as well while going through the programmes.
I think that’s also another brilliant way to get speaking gigs. Another one is speaking in schools.
If you will love working with people, if you have a passion about working with people you can find a lot of opportunities while speaking into schools.
Now, you can approach schools directly or, listen to this, you can get other organisations to pay you to go in and deliver their own material.
I’ve doing that as a contractor for the last six years.
That’s how my speaking journey started.
That’s actually how I started as a speaker. You being a contractor for other organisations, other companies that will pay me to go into schools.
That was a great way. Then number 11 which is TedX.
Now, TedX has a great website. You can find TedX talks all over the world and approach them and propose yourself as a TedX speaker.
There is an application process, you need to be selected, if you don’t know how to do it, we have a programme in our membership site that is called: “Get on TedX with GTeX” where we can help you land a TedX talk, guide you through the application, how it works, what to say, what not to say, and all that shabang.
So let me know if you are- there is the link of our membership site, and joining our membership programme here in the show notes.
Then another way is, which is way 11, is to connect with other speakers. Why? Because speakers give speakers work.
Remember that. Speakers give speakers work. Let me repeat it one more time: Speakers give speakers work. Oh yeah.
The more speakers you know the better it is. Why?
Because they are gonna be able to connect you with other event organisers.
And because they will connect you with other event organisers, and they speak already at other events then they might find that if you have a good relationship with them, they might connect you with the gig of your life.
So that’s a great way to get speaking gigs. Another one is create your own event.
A lot of people, speakers, they’ll think that actually, “If no one is getting me as a speaker, how do I start?” You create your own bloody event.
Because no one can say no to your own event. It’s yours.
So you’re the only one that can kick you out. But I don’t think you’re gonna do that. Unless maybe you need some theatre speaker training in that case.
But you just need to create your event.
That’s, for example, how I started. I needed more confidence and no one knew me so it was very difficult for me to find speaking gigs.
The very first speaking gig I got it was my own event. I said “No one wants me? Okay I’ll get people to come to me”
And of course no one knew me so very few people came to me but then that helped me to grow my reputation and my skills and my abilities in the market.
And right now we’re running more than 80-100 of our own events every year. Pretty good, right? Because I love running events.
Then we’re in number 14 which is corporate gigs. That’s where you’re going, you’re getting paid as a keynote speaker to go into corporate so they might have end of the year celebration.
They might have sales meetings. They might have industry conferences. And that’s where they will pay you as a keynote speaker.
To go there, you’re not going to sell anything, you’re not going to mention your product, you’re not going to mention your services, but you’re going there to deliver information to them and to the audience and you get paid a fee.
And then you have another way, which is the 15th one which is speaking bureaus.
Now, this works again, if you are a corporate speaker. And actually, in episode we are going to release soon, an episode which I just arranged a interview with an organiser from a speaker bureau that she manages and runs a speaking bureau herself.
It’s her own speaking bureau. We’re going to talk about how to approach speaking bureaus. What kind of speakers speaking bureaus are looking for.
So you know if actually you can get an extra stream of gig.
If you don’t know what a speaking bureau is, it’s an organisation that will liaise with an event company or with a particular corporate client, the hiring of a speaker.
They will generally be in charge of payment, the contract, the logistics, everything else and the bureaus get paid and then the bureaus then is gonna pay the speaker the fee they want.
So these are the 15 ways to get speaking gigs. Let’s recap, let’s just do a tour de force and recapping it one more time and as I said, here in the show notes, and in the link in the comments, you will see the link with the breakdown of the webinar that we did where I spend more time talking about how the 15 different ways work.
As I said, we have only 20 minutes for this show so I don’t have time to give you all the details of all the 15 because otherwise it ends up to be a two hours webinar like I did when I did all the 15’s in detail.
So that’s cool? Brilliant. So let’s recap from the beginning. Let’s start the music, my friend.
